Skyscrapers of Dubai

Unbelievable.

That’s what you can’t help but say when you visit Dubai.

Tucked away between latitude 25°North and longitude 55° East, Dubai is the largest city of the United Arab Emirates and is also home to some of the largest buildings in the entire world.

This article will look at four of them. And whilst they may not be one of your places to stay in Dubai due to the huge cost and waiting lists, you can at least make a note to visit them when you’re next in Dubai.

So without further ado, here are the skyscrapers of Dubai.

Burj Khalifa: The Tallest Building in the World

At 2,772 feet, the Burj Khalifa – also known as Khalifa Towers – is the tallest man-made structure in the world.

Its construction was started in September 2004 and completed in October 2009. And it became symbolic of the UAE government’s decision to diversify from an oil based economy to a service and tourism based economy. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister of the UAE, wanted to put Dubai on the map with ‘something sensational’.

Well, the Burj Khalifa truly is sensational.

Another claim to fame that the Burj Khalifa has is that of being a key feature in Tom Cruise’s fourth Mission Impossible movie. In the film, Tom Cruise performs an action sequence where he scales the outside of the Burj Khalifa tower without the use of a stunt double.

Princess Tower: the Tallest Residential Building in the World

Measuring 414 metres from base to tip, the 107 storey, 1,358feet tall Princess Tower holds the Guinness World Record for being the tallest residential building in the world.

This colossal residential skyscraper is located in the gorgeous Marina district of Dubai. It occupies 37,410 square feet and has 763 luxury apartments.

Because of its expensive rates, this might not be one of your places to stay in Dubai...particularly since you can find gorgeous alternative accommodation close by that doesn’t cost the Earth.

However, be sure to stop by to admire this wonderful construction.

Almas Tower: the Tallest Office Building in the World

The Almas Tower has a bit of a grudge.

Why?

Well, despite being 1,180 feet tall, having 68 storeys, being located in the dazzling Jumeirah Lake Towers Free Zone of Dubai, and even having its name mean “diamond” in Arabic...it holds a grudge because it used to be the tallest building in Dubai.

And then from 2010 it was overtaken first by the Burj Khalifa, and then by the Princess Tower.

Still, it has the consolation of being the tallest office building in the world. It also has an excessively high level of security because it is the headquarters of the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre, the Dubai Diamond Exchange, the Dubai Pearl Exchange, the Dubai Gems Club, and others.

This is one skyscraper you want to visit.

JW Marriot Marquis: the Tallest Hotel in the World

The JW Marriot Marquis Dubai Hotel is the largest hotel in the world. With 72 floors, this 1,165ft twin-tower skyscraper complex has 1,608 rooms run by Marriot International.

Rooms start at this stunning 5-star hotel start from £187 per night. For most of us, that price tag automatically knocks it off our list of Dubai holiday rentals. But what you can do is stay at a luxurious and affordable apartment nearby, and use some of the money you save to shop or have something to eat at one of the JW Marriot’s many retail and food outlets.
